Google HOLA

UI Design

Google HOLA is an employee resource group (ERG) at Google focused on supporting and empowering the Latinx community within the company and beyond.

Overview

Task

I was tasked with redesigning the Google HOLA website to create a more cohesive visual identity while also using their existing brand colors. I also worked to restructure the information architecture so that users could more easily find the information they needed.

Challenge

Since the site was internal and there was no way for me to access the site without being an official Google employee I worked with screenshots to analyze the content that was currently on their site.

Process

Content Audit & Read Through

I began the project by

  • Skimming all the copy to understand what’s there and what’s important

  • Highlighted different types of content by color coding in Figma (e.g., headings, CTAs, paragraphs, links, etc.)

  • Identified anything redundant or unclear.

Categorize (mini card sorting)

I then began to categorize the content by themes or categories, and checking in with the client to ask for screenshots and screen recordings along the way if I had any questions about where a link took a user to.

Hierarchy

From their I began to create a hierarchy of which content needed to be seen first, which content could be shortened and skimmible, and which content would benefit by adding some visual interest such as the HOLA timeline.

Outcome

Although the site was ultimately not implemented due to a company-wide initiative to standardize all ERG websites, the project helped me grow in working within an established brand system, and really helped to strengthen my skills in information architecture.
