Designing A Social Discovery App and Print Guide for Karaoke Enthusiasts Visiting San Diego
Overview
As a karaoke enthusiast, I often found it frustrating to navigate the sign-up process at karaoke bars. Whether it was long waits on the sign-up list or missing the opportunity to sing from being unable to hear your name being called… I worked to solve these challenges by designing an app that allows users to easily join a queue, see upcoming performances, and track current singers in real time.
What you can do
Find a karaoke bar near you
view the current queue to estimate your wait time
search for you favorite go-to karaoke song and add yourself to the queue
request to sing a duet with someone
follow along while someone is singing and send them an applause
earn badges for singing duets or classic genres

Since Karaoke arose in the 70s and 80s, I focused on retro branding, utilizing fun typefaces called Intro Inline and Xtreem. For the visual design I also focused on paying homage to the fun three-colored rainbow of red orange and yellow as well that’s often seen in the 70’s/80’s design era.
I decided to also include a spinning record player as a fun loading element that I animated using Adobe After Effects.
